The Technique
We have positioned the seven bowls in a circle with a special pair of microphones in the middle of the room. One person is stationed at each bowl, and plays in specific patterns on each recorded track. The result varies from one bowl playing alone, to sequences of several bowls playing and fading in and out. The result is a sound pattern that bathes the central microphones from different directions of the listener's orientation. Listening with headphones very accurately reproduces the sound patterns to the listener. Listening with stereo speakers bathes the room with incredible cascading sounds, and has especially good bass response.
The Recording Method
The special microphones are shaped like the cochlea (inner ear), and are worn by the user on either side of his temples to reproduce the exact environment of hearing related to the ears. The user (Dr. Jelusich) sat in the exact center of the seven bowls, in the plane of their richest sound, to create a highly accurate 3-D reproduction of the crystal bowls. The result is true 3-D recording, because the microphones are separated by the tissue mass of the head, and "hear" in the same way that you do. The sounds were recorded digitally, so no "hiss" will be introduced to the listening experience.
